Ingredients

Biscuits
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup cold unsalted butter cubed
  • ¾ cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tablespoon vinegar added)
Gravy
  • 1 lb breakfast sausage
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: crushed red pepper flakes for extra heat

Directions

Biscuits
  • Preheat to 450°F.
  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add cold butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in buttermilk until just combined; don’t overmix.
  • Turn dough onto a floured surface and gently knead 2-3 times. Pat into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
  • Use a biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits. Place them on a baking sheet.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Gravy
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and crumbly.
  • Sprinkle flour over the cooked sausage and stir for 1-2 minutes.
  • Gradually whisk in milk, stirring constantly. Cook until gravy thickens (about 5-7 minutes).
  • Add salt and pepper to taste, and optional red pepper flakes.
Serve
  • Split the warm biscuits and spoon the sausage gravy over them. Enjoy your hearty meal!
